Don’t feel bad about getting a ‘cheaper website’

Monday, November 10th, 2008

Being in the web design business, it’s common for me to run across people who have or need a website- in fact, every day! :-)  It’s also quite common for me to meet people who have the need for a site, but can’t (or shouldn’t) afford to spend $4,000 to have a fully custom-designed site with a custom content management system and everything. Most of the time when people that fit that description and they’re speaking to me, they apologize for it. I hear things like “I’m sorry, I just can’t afford that right now, but when I get the money I’ll be sure to call you…”

My response: “Don’t Feel Bad!” Honestly, many small businesses will not benefit from a $4K website and the $19.95/mo. from el-cheap-o – DOT – COM will work just fine!!! “What?! You’re crazy- you’ll lose business by saying that, Mr. Jay.” No, I won’t- and here’s why:

  1. If you sell a product and don’t sell it online- why do you need much of a website? Use it like a brochure- show your product and why people should buy it. Then, spend most of your money and energy getting those distributors to jump on board. #1 rule of getting distributed: “If your buyers can sell LOTS of your product, they’ll BUY LOTS of it!” So prove to them the benefits and why their customers will care.
  2. If you sell a service, there’s little need for an online shopping cart. Plus, in many small businesses, the client is not only buying the service you sell, but they’re buying the experience of working with YOU! (Read this article on why you should care about how you present yourself.)
  3. If I do my job right, I’m actually helping people. If I sell someone something they don’t need then that wouldn’t be fulfilling that purpose at all.

I hope your company does grow to a point where it needs to be custom. There are a lot of companies that can use a custom-designed website, and many websites cost much more than $4K. The main issue here is- don’t do it if you don’t need it.
